Theaster Gates’ Black Chapel, the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion, is a circular timber structure inspired by sacred spaces, kilns, and communal gathering. Its dark, enclosed form creates a quiet and contemplative interior, while a central opening connects the space to the sky. Rather than prescribing a single use, the pavilion acts as a flexible gathering space for performances, conversation, reflection, and community events. Its simple geometry demonstrates how enclosure, atmosphere, and a shared center can transform a basic shelter into meaningful social infrastructure.
